An "escort" doesn't know what to watch for. An assistant fades in to the background like a piece of equipment. The "escort" might be tempted to "goof off" and do things like flash light from a reflector in a model's eyes, and putting the escort in the model's sight-line sets up the potential for distraction, seeking of "approval," or directions from the "escort". An "escort' has no stake in the shoot or listening to you, and so is apt to wander off in boredom or to answer a cell phone call right when you need them, or just not follow directions. Assistants are there to work with the equipment. An "escort" has NO training and so might botch the job or damage equipment, potentially deliberately or accidentally doing something like dropping a $150 reflector in a mud puddle. If you need an assistant, hire one or recruit a student from your local photography school or partner with another photographer to help each other out. Ok, first the stock answer to the "assistant" thing:

Why pay for a female assistant, when the model has a designated one she can use for free who just so happens to be male? on paid gigs with agency models I've never known or heard of it being an issue (mainly because of-age agency models would really never bring an escort, and any model showing up with someone who caused disruption would get dropped like a hot rock), and on gigs where I'm hired & am being paid I don't care what they do as long as there's someone around to monitor my equipment & my personal security & I am guaranteed a pay day no matter what.

#2 "Any photographer who says 'no escorts' is up to no good & is probably a murdering rapist! It happens to models ALLLLL the time so you MUST have one!"īTW, you're also mentioning clients. #1, a model or photographer says "This is how EVERYONE should do their business and if you say otherwise I'm going to tell people not to work with you" Like I said, my only real issue comes in when one of two things happen: I'd gladly refer all the models who want escorts to you. And honestly, I don't know if this is the same for other models, but my mother is WAY more obstructive and distracting during shoots than my boyfriend, and I don't have any other family to bring so that eliminates the "bring a family member instead" thing for me.Īs a photographer, would you ever consider checking with other photographers a model has worked with to see if the boyfriend is ok to bring?Ĭongrats on never having had an issue. While I can understand the worry that most photographers would have about having a boyfriend on set, I really think that they shouldn't just say no boyfriends because I doubt that mine is the only helpful one out there. He has helped with lighting, providing make-shift changing rooms for me when we are outside, and with anything else he is asked to do. He's quiet, unobtrusive and is always willing to help the photographer with whatever they may need. Personally, I've brought my boyfriend to all of my shoots and all of the photographers have actually really appreciated having him there. Ok so I understand that a lot of photographers refuse to shoot with models who bring boyfriends to a shoot, and I can see the legitimacy in it that because I know that a lot of boyfriends can be controlling or distracting but what about boyfriends who aren't that way? Do you refuse to let them come too? I always allow escorts no ifs and or buts. I have never had any issues with any escorts ever - I take it that I am lucky in that respect because of so many horror stories.

I have never checked with another photographer about boyfriends or girlfriends but I do check and share info on models, MUA's and stylists etc.
